Triton 3D is a student organization at UC San Diego for students who have a passion for additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping and 3D printing for fun. We were officially founded in January 2015, and have been one of the most active new organizations on campus.
Our active project teams work hand in hand with faculty in the Jacobs School of Engineering and other UC San Diego departments to conduct cutting edge research with the goal of finding how 3D printing can change the way we look at the world and solve problems. We also offer support to all the Maker Spaces across campus including the Digital Media Lab in Geisel Library, the Envision Maker Space, and more.
Our flagship outreach event is the annual Makeathon competition. The Makeathon is a weekend-long CAD and 3D printing challenge where competitors are given a prompt that they design and build a solution for. The event offers beginner and advanced categories so that that students of all skill levels can compete. The 2016 Makeathon was very successful with over 60 competitors and more than 10 3D printers running simultaneously, generously loaned by ROBO 3D. The event was also sponsored by Autodesk in their initiative to help student organizations across colleges and universities learn how to use their programs and promote their newest, most refined program, Fusion 360.
